New “Module” Layout

If you’ve been to The Design Gene in the past you probably noticed the new layout. I wanted to do something more fluid, and more modular. The main goal was to display more entries at one time on any given screen resolution and unify the Design Gallery, Designer Showcase and Blog. Hope you like it and please feel free to let me know what you think.

New Category – Design Tools

Since The Design Gene’s inception I’ve received quite a few really useful websites for designers. Some are well-known, but a lot of are new sites or those that I’ve never heard of. So, I created a new category “design tools” just for them. This category is designated for all sorts of tools and resources, including tech blogs, vector graphic sites, psd to html layout, typography-related sites, wordpress themes, and more.

Whew, it’s been a while since the gallery has been updated. I’ve been swamped with design work and finally got a long enough break to add some new entries. I had some 200 to go through, so the last updated was quite extensive. Hope you enjoy! No related posts. No related posts.

The Designer Showcase beta is Live

The Designer Showcase is live and at http://thedesigngene.com/web-designers. The Designer Showcase is a work in progress that will showcase the best web and graphic designers from around the world. It is meant to be a search tool for potential clients and also as an advertisement tool for designers. Hope you find it useful! If you’re a designer, please feel free to submit your site to the showcase.

Welcome! The Design Gene is a new spot for creative minds to get a bit of inspiration, and promote their work and portfolio. The site is divided into three interconnected sections: The Design Gene (main showcase), Designer Showcase, and the Blog.

The Design Gene (main showcase)

The Design Gene’s main showcase is a compilation of outstanding website designs, and includes CSS sites, flash sites, and blogs. Anyone can submit a design, but please note there are some criteria for acceptance, albeit, rather loose criteria. Basically we’re looking for awesome websites of any type. The look of the website is of course the first thing considered. Minimal, grunge, vintage, cartoon, corporate…. any and and all styles are considered. Although we will not validate your code, we encourage you to only submit websites created using w3 standards and that have been cross-browser tested. We use Firefox and generally will check each site in IE as well.

What’s Not Accepted
Plaigerized websites, obscene material, and adult content sites will not be considered. Incomplete websites, those with poorly written CSS or XHTML, and those that have significant cross-browser issues will not be accepted.

All websites accepted to the Designer Showcase will also appear in The Design Gene’s main showcase, and vice versa.

Designer Showcase

The Designer Showcase is an extension of The Design Gene’s main showcase. The Designer Showcase is only for design studios, freelancers, graphic artists, etc. We noticed that the majority of submissions we receive to The Design Gene were web studios and freelance portfolios. Posts in The Designer Showcase include more information than those listed only in The Design Gene’s main showcase. Designer listings include location, phone, email address (optional), telephone, and a pretty big blurb about each designer or company. The Designer Showcase was created as a tool for both clients and designers. Potential clients have a place to easily browse the best web designers from around the world, and designers gain a bit of advertising space and social networking.

Anyone can submit a site to the Designer Showcase as well, but please only submit design studios, graphic design companies, and freelance portfolios. All websites accepted to the Designer Showcase will also appear in The Design Gene’s main showcase, and vice versa.
